Hepatitis B: Treatment and care for a chronic condition

cures No Comments »

Viral hepatitis includes both hepatitis B and hepatitis C. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Na Li, MD, PhD, explains that there have been promising medical advancements to cure hepatitis C, while hepatitis B presents more challenges.

As a chronic condition, medications are used to manage hepatitis B, depending on the particular phase of infection, as well as other existing medical conditions or infections such as hepatitis C or HIV. Dr. Li emphasizes the need for monitoring patients with past or current hepatitis B infections, because there is greater risk of cancer. In addition, chemotherapy may reactivate hepatitis B.

HIGHLIGHTS | Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal | Premier League | June 17, 2020

injuries No Comments »

We made an unhappy return to Premier League football on Wednesday night, as Manchester City claimed a 3-0 victory at Etihad Stadium.

After a 102-day interval, and returning to very different Premier League conditions, you might have expected a cagy start – but there was none of that here.

Within five minutes Eddie Nketiah thought he had beaten the City backline to the ball only to be flagged offside, before Kevin De Bruyne forced Bernd Leno into a sharp save – and then Granit Xhaka was stretchered off with an ankle problem.

We were playing brightly with Nketiah at the fore, but another injury, this time to Pablo Luiz, proved a setback for Mikel Arteta as he sought to get one over his former club.

Leno was soon at the heart of the action as City took control, making three excellent saves in quick succession to deny Raheem Sterling, David Silva and Riyad Mahrez.

But the German could do nothing when, on the stroke of half time, David Luiz misjudged De Bruyne’s ball and Sterling ran in and smashed the ball into the top corner.

Things went from bad to worse after the restart when Mahrez got the wrong side of David Luiz, and when he went down in the area under the Brazilian’s challenge, the red card was shown and a penalty awarded.

De Bruyne made no mistake from the spot, and suddenly we were right up against it.

With an extra man advantage, City inevitably remained in control and Leno was called into action to deny De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan.

City added a third in injury time when Phil Foden slammed it into the roof of the net after Leno had turned Aguero’s shot on to the post, and it capped off a disappointing evening in Manchester.

Trier Attack: 4 Killed, 15 Injured After German Man Drives Car Into Crowd

A man zig-zagged an SUV at high speed through a pedestrian zone in the southwestern German city of Trier on Tuesday, killing four people, including a 9-month-old child, and seriously injuring 15, officials said.

The driver, identified as a 51-year-old German man born in Trier, was arrested at the scene and the vehicle was impounded, Trier police said.

The suspect, whose name was not released in line with German privacy laws, had no fixed address and had been living in recent days in the Land Rover that a friend had loaned him, which was used in the attack, said prosecutor Peter Fritzen, who was heading the investigation.

He was being interrogated by police and was to undergo a psychiatric examination, Fritzen said, adding that a doctor had recently reached the preliminary conclusion the man could be suffering from mental illness.

Four people were still in life-threatening danger in the hospital and five others suffered serious injuries, while another six had less serious injuries, state Interior Minister Roger Lewentz said. The others killed were identified as a 25-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man from Trier; the baby’s mother was among those hospitalized. Police said the oldest victim was aged 73.

Trier is about 200 kilometers (120 miles) west of Frankfurt, near the border with Luxembourg. The city of about 110,000 people is known for its Roman gate, the Porta Nigra, which is near the scene of the incident, and as the birthplace of Karl Marx.

Preventing Sports Injuries

injuries No Comments »

Each year millions of young athletes are injured while playing a contact sport. Health experts say more than half of those injuries can be prevented.

Mark Tesoro, a trauma services educator at Lee Memorial Health System says each year dozens of student athletes are taken to the Trauma Center after sustaining injuries while playing sports. “1.35 million kids have sport related injuries a year, and about half of those are believed to be preventable. We do see probably about a half dozen concussions a year and probably about 15 to 18 fractures, sport related fractures, a year.”

Tesoro says dehydration, contusions, and abrasions are the most common injuries seen in student athletes over the age of 13. “From zero to 13, we probably see more bicycle injuries and playground injuries. From 13 and above the kids get stronger and faster and they tend to be more organized sports injuries so that tends to be the football, soccer, and the baseball injuries.”

To prevent sport injuries, Tesoro says it’s important for young athletes to make sure they are drinking plenty of water before, during, and after a sport. They also need to make sure they are wearing the correct attire and safety gear. “Coaching is a big part of it. A lot of these injuries can be prevented from really good technique. If you learn how to tackle correctly at a very young age, you’re not going to see those injuries,” said Tesoro.

Resting is also important. Health experts say overuse is a common cause of injury that can have long-term effects as the athlete gets older. “We hear a lot about little league shoulder and little league arm, even tennis elbow, and those kinds of things are overuse injuries. A lot of times those growth plates get disturbed and you’re still as a child growing and you’re injuring those limbs,” said Tesoro.

To make sure the athlete isn’t pushed beyond his or her limits, the coach needs to be aware of any health issues the athlete may have.

When animal species invade lands that are foreign to them, it tends to cause a great deal of panic and hysteria for the residents of the area where they have arrived. In many instances, the description of their presence when it is reported on the news can sound like something straight out of a low-budget science fiction movie.

The New Guinea flatworm is the latest menace to make its way into areas where they are not wanted and its dark colored upper body is juxtaposed with an orange stripe down the center of their backs. They subsist on snails and slugs and have no natural predators because of their foul taste.
